Regional distribution of primary market issues

 

There has been a marginal decline in the number of issues and amount raised by issuers in the Western Region. In 1996-97, issuers in the Western Region made 361 issues (40.84% of the total number of issues), which raised Rs.9,045.29 crore (63.32% of funds raised). In 1995-96, issuers in the Western Region made 680 issues (39.42% of total issues), which raised Rs. 10,811.34 crore (51.97% of the total funds raised).

 

The share of issuers in the Northern Region in the number of issues and the amount raised also decreased slightly. In 1996-97 issuers in the Northern Region made 222 issues (25.11% of the total number of issues); which raised Rs.3,384.72 crore (23.70% of total funds raised). In 1995-96 issuers in the Northern Region made 467 issues (27.07% of the total issues in that year), which raised Rs.5,109.21 crore (24.56% of the total funds raised).

In 1996-97, issuers in the Southern Region made 187 issues for an amount for Rs.1,087.36 crore accounting for 21.15% of the total issues and 7.61% of the total amount raised. The number of issues made from the Southern Region during 1995-96 was 410 (23.77% of the total issues made) raising Rs.3,466.73 crore (16.66% of the total funds raised). The share of southern issuers, therefore, increased, in terms of number of issues, but declined in terms of amount raised.

In 1996-97, issuers in the Eastern Region made 114 issues for raising Rs.766.94 crore accounting for 12.90% of the total issues and 5.37% of the total amount raised. The number of issues made from the Eastern Region during 1995-96 was 168 accounting for 9.74% of the total issues made raising Rs.1,416.35 crore accounting for 6.80% of the total funds raised.
