Distribution of primary issues by industry

 

It is interesting to note that out of 884 issues made in 1996-97, 283 issues were made by finance companies raising Rs.1,393.92 crore. While in terms of number, they accounted for 32.01% of the total issues made, such issues accounted for only 9.76% of the total amount raised. In 1995-96, the number of issues made by the finance companies was 531 (30.78% of the number of issues) raising Rs.2,562.59 crore (12.32% of the total amount). Banks and financial institutions made only 10 issues but raised Rs.5,752 crore accounting for 40.27% of the total amount raised. The other leading industries in terms of number of issues and the amount raised were cement and construction, chemicals, food processing, metal, textile, and health care. The distribution of issues made by industry is given in Table 4.
